GOOGLE | New Logo and Why

Making Bigger and Bolder Look Better On Smaller

The New Google Logo, a major change made by the company was unveiled yesterday. The same color scheme is used but it has been made brighter and an entirely new typeface has been used. Google's new typeface is now a thicker and bold  sans-serif which is also Alphabet's (Google's new parent company) logo.

This makeover has a practical motivation. The kind of lettering used is easier to read when shrunk down - Google products are increasingly on mobile devices and wear-able.

The new branding replaces the last Google logo, which the company has used since September 2013.

In a blog post announcing the change, Google's Tamar Yehoshua and Bobby Nath said - "We've taken the Google logo and branding, which were originally built for a single desktop browser page, and updated them for a world of seamless computing across an endless number of devices".

The World received a shocker on Monday - August 10, 2015 from the Official Google  blog and since then questions have emerged about this new company called Alphabet.

Where does this new structure leave Google:

Google will be the largest subsidiary of parent company - Alphabet, whose structure is said to be similar to that of Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway.

The tech gaint announced it's re-branding on Monday – Alphabet a new holding company whose largest wholly owned subsidiary will be Google.

In a surprise and apologetic blog post made public after the stock markets closed - Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google’s co-founders, announced a radical shake-up of the company’s corporate structure and management, handing control of its core search engine business to rising star Sundar Pichai.

Android | What You Should Know

Android WearAndroid WearAndroid PhonesAndroid TabletAndroid TV

What is Android:

Android is a mobile operating system (OS) based on the Linux kernel and currently developed by Google. It's user interface is based on direct manipulation and it is designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers, with specialized user interfaces for televisions (Android TV), cars (Android Auto), and wrist watches (Android Wear).
The touch inputs are - swiping, tapping, pinching, and reverse pinching to manipulate on-screen objects, and a virtual keyboard. Android although designed for touchscreen, has also been used in game consoles, digital cameras, regular PCs, and other electronics. As of 2015, Android has the largest installed base of all operating systems.

The history of Android mobile operating system began with the release of the Android beta in November 2007. The first commercial version, Android 1.0, was released in September 2008. Android is under ongoing development by Google and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), and has seen a number of updates to its base operating system since its initial release.

An April–May 2013 survey of mobile application developers found that 71% of them create applications for Android; another 2015 survey found that 40% of full-time professional developers see Android as the "priority" target platform, which is more than iOS (37%) or other platforms. As of July 2013, the Google Play store has had over one million Android applications ("apps") published, and over 50 billion applications downloaded.

Since April 2009, Android versions have been developed under a confectionery-themed code name and released in alphabetical order, beginning with Android 1.5 "Cupcake"; the earlier versions 1.0 and 1.1 were not released under specific code names. Android's most recent major update is Android 5.0 "Lollipop", which was released on November 3, 2014.
The Version and Codename is listed below:

Android | The Text Message Hack Controversy

Android Text Hack
Android Text Message Hack

Research published on Monday confirms: Android phones can get infected by merely receiving a picture via text message

It affects an estimated 950 million phones worldwide -- about 95% of the Androids in use today. This has become the biggest smartphone flaw ever discovered at the present.

The problem stems from the way Android phones analyze incoming text messages. Even before you open a message, the phone automatically processes incoming media files -- including pictures, audio or video. This implies that a malware-laden file can start infecting the phone as soon as it's received, according to Zimperium, a cyber-security company that specializes in mobile devices.

This Android flaw is somewhat like the recent Apple text hack.
But in that case, a text message with just the right characters could freeze an iPhone or force it to restart.

Windows 10 | The new Windows 7

Update:  Microsoft's Windows 10 is the new Windows 7

This is the dramatic climax to what Microsoft set out to do for computers over four years ago - Windows 10. The Redmond, Wash based firm's first attempt to smooth over the inevitable collision of laptops and tablets; Windows 8, ended in what's widely regarded as a flop and Windows 8.1 helped, but not much.
But this time, things are different. Despite learning it the hard way, Microsoft has clearly gathered crucial feedback over the short lifespan of Windows 8 and turned it into what might be the firm's most well-equipped piece of software yet.

What We Know About The Next IPhone

It's not clear what Apple will call its 2015 iPhones, but Apple may stick to its long running "S" naming scheme (which has been around since 2009), calling the new phones the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus. iPhone 6s Plus is a mouthful though, so it is possible that this might be the year that we get a new naming format. One analyst believes Apple might call its next-generation phone the "iPhone 7" due to the significance of the new changes being implemented, but it's far too early in development to know for sure.

The Chrome extension adds a "Send with Dmail" button next to the regular "Send" button in any email you compose. This gives you complete control to revoke sent emails.

The Question: "Doesn't Gmail allow users to revoke sent emails"
The Answer: Yes and No. Gmail's "undo send" button only works for up to 30 seconds.

Top Four Tech Companies | By Stock Performance

four horsemen
www.askpryme.com
Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google are undeniably leaders in their respective markets - and their stock performance this year shows that.

  • Apple the laggard of the group with its shares up only 17% in 2015.
  • Facebook has gained more than 25%.
  • Google is now up 30%.
  • Amazon has soared 55%.

So what's next for these fabulous four?
Apple is the only one of these stocks that could be considered a bargain. It trades for just 13 times earnings estimates for next year. The company is the only one of these four that also pays a dividend.

Not to Mind all the talks about Apple Watch sales being lackluster, Apples earnings show that iPhone demand is still ridiculously strong.
Google now trades for more than 20 times 2016 profit forecasts thanks to July 17's big move. But for the first time in a while, Google is living up to the hype.

The latest earnings showed strength in mobile and online video advertising. And Wall Street loves that new CFO Ruth Porat (formerly of Morgan Stanley (MS)) is promising to be more disciplined when it comes to expenses.

What Happened to Ashley Madison - Hacked

This is 2015, staying private and using your real name online is an insane idea.

News Alert: Ashley Madison - the Cheat-on-your-spouse website got hacked. The hackers are threatening to reveal the names of the sites 37 million cheating users.

Lesson Alert: If you give a company your name, credit card number, photo, address - don't expect it to stay secret forever.
It has been revealed - No website can guarantee privacy. Every computer can be hacked. That's the reality.

Here's the dirty little secret only computer engineers know. The way the Internet was built, it's inherently insecure. Communicating online is like sending paper notes on an automobile highway in a war zone.
To keep your notes private, mathematicians come up with complex algorithms to encrypt communication.

Yik Yak the Anonymous messaging App Now Shares Images

It is now Official that Yik Yak has the ability to share photos, after months of testing.

The anonymous messaging app, which previously let users anonymously post text-based messages only, announced on Wednesday it plans on rolling out photo-sharing to all users over the next several days.
The start-up wrote in a blog post "Sure, you could describe that amazing Eggs Benedict your mom just made for breakfast (let’s be real, sometimes being home for summer has its perks), but it’s often more tantalizing to share a drool-inducing photo of it, too,".

It was reported in March that Yik Yak was testing out photo-sharing with a small subset of users. To combat potential issues around nudity, bullying and sexual harassment, the start-up had employees moderate those photos before they appeared in the app.
According to Yik Yak, employees will continue to moderate photos being uploaded by all users for the time being. It also reiterated guidelines, including no inappropriate photos — or "anything you wouldn't send to your mother" — or illegal content. Photos with faces won't be allowed in local feeds, but they will be allowed in photo collections, which can be found in the Explore section of the app.

Microsoft Windows 10 preview gets Update ahead of Official Release Date

With the Windows 10 launch just weeks away, Microsoft rolled out a new build Wednesday to Windows Insiders, the group that tests early versions of the software.

Microsoft may have just dropped the first official version of Windows 10 that will roll out beyond the company's group of early testers.

Officially, Microsoft has not specified whether the latest build is the same as the version expected to drop July 29, but multiple reports surfaced Wednesday suggesting Build 10240 will be the one designated as the "release to manufacturing" version. Even if Build 10240 is not officially the RTM build, a designation that's becoming less defined as Microsoft revamps its update process, the latest build will likely be very similar to what Microsoft will send to manufacturers and what those who update from Windows 8.1 will see.

The 'Pregnancy wireless' Router Setting Controversy in China

Two Chinese tech firms have clashed over a new wireless router with a special setting for pregnant women.

Qihoo 360 unveiled the device, an upgrade to an existing product, which has three settings it describes on its website as wall penetration, balance and "pregnant women".
The third setting reduces radiation emitted by the router by 70%, the firm claims.
However, tech giant Xiaomi has accused Qihoo of scare-marketing.
Xiaomi said in a post on social media site Weibo "The so-called pregnancy mode is just a marketing tactic. Wi-fi usage is safe, so please rest assured when using it."
Zhou Hongyi, Qihoo's chief executive, said at Qihoo's P1 launch event that the firm was "targeting people who are afraid of radiation", reported the South China Morning Post.
The two firms are fierce rivals, and Xiaomi has also recently launched a new router product, which offers six terabytes of storage and high-speed connections but does not include this setting.

Text Walking Lane, An Innovative Initiative or A Public Stunt?

'Text walking lane' in Antwerp (June 2015)
Sending text messages in the centre of the Belgian city of Antwerp has become relatively safer. Authorities of the city has provided dedicated temporary "text walking lanes" so that people texting do not collide with pedestrians.

The initiative is the brainchild of a smartphone store based in the city. It says that a significant number of mobile phone breakages happen because of "text walking" collisions.

The US Census Bureau show that there are about 7.2 billion people in the world, compared 7.5 billion mobile devices according to figures released by mobile operators and associated companies
There are now believed to be more mobile phones in the world than people.
A spokesman for Mlab, a smart phone laboratory based in Antwerp, was quoted by Yahoo News as saying,

Android M | Unveiled alongside Updated Cardboard Virtual Reality Kit

Sundar Pichai

Google showed off some functions of the next version of its Android mobile operating system.

Google says it'll give users greater control over their privacy settings and will also introduce a new smart wallet service called Android Pay.
The tech giants also unveiled a new photos and video storage app with "unlimited" free storage and an updated version of its Cardboard virtual reality headset.
One tech consultant said "Google IO lacked the headline announcements of recent years but nonetheless underlined the company's ecosystem advantage by virtue of the Android installed base, user knowledge, machine learning and highly integrated services."

Android Pay

The Android M, addresses concerns about third-party apps' access to smartphone and tablet data by making it easier for users to control the permissions given to each app.
Apps in the future will ask to be allowed access to location data, contacts, calendar, camera, microphone and other sensors the first time they need to use them, rather than at the point of installation.
If in doubt, users can later go into their settings and see what permissions each app is using and revoke the ones they are not happy with.
The new mobile system  will also allow fingerprints to be used as ID checks for purchases made through websites and in physical stores, where devices can be used in the place of payment cards via a new service called Android Pay.

BeeRaider a Qwerty Challenge or Takeover?

Efficiency and Speed in typing? Try BeeRaider keyboard

Ray McEnaney wasn’t satisfied with other typing options people turn to with the most prominent among them being Dvorak, which aims to minimize how far the fingers travel and reduce fatigue. He thought users need to seriously commit to becoming proficient. That’s how we get to the BeeRaider, his oddly shaped keyboard that resembles a bee in flight, with two “wings” of keys arranged on either side of a radial center. The layout is larger, with the keys you need most at the center (which gives you less fatigue, McEnaney says). Keys that he considers “more useless” including Q, K and X are placed farther away.

Android Auto | Now Offered in New Hyndai Cars

Hyundai has now become the first auto makers to offer Google's Android Auto Systems in it's 2015 Sonata Model.

This was first announced in January 2014 by Google who said it was working with automakers including Hyundai, Audi and Honda to integrate the system in to their dashboards.

New Adblock Plus Mobile-friendly Browser

The new Adblock Plus Mobile friendly browser blocks ads automatically.

Adblock Plus, the maker of the world's most downloaded ad-blocking browser extension, has launched its own mobile browser on May 20, 2015.
This is a most welcome news to Ads-Haters and a not-so-good news to advertisers.
The German company says it wants to give people a way to block ads automatically when they surf the Web on their phones. The company says users may see improved battery life and save on data costs as an added benefit due to less digital content loads.

Android Phone | The Folly of Selling Your Device

Thinking of selling your Android phone?, chances are your text messages, emails, pictures and Facebook key are still in there, even if you wiped its memory clean or used Factory reset.

Computer researchers at the University of Cambridge in a recent study now shows that "factory reset", at least on Android devices doesn't actually erase everything.
The study show that sometimes, it doesn't even get close to wiping anything off the memory.
Researchers performed tests on 21 phones made by Google, HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung. In all the tests, they were able to recover text messages, Google account credentials and conversations on messaging apps and also a few emails remained on the device more than 50% of the time.

Jobs Threatened by Automatons

Soon you could be competing with a robot for a job.

Economists are sharply divided over the exact timing of the threat from robots and other forms of futuristic technology. Some see an imminent threat, others believe it won't happen until later this century -- if at all. Yet Amy Webb, a digital media futurist and founder of Webbmedia Group, predicts at least eight career fields are "ripe for disruption" very soon -- like in the next 10 to 20 years. "You should be quite worried," Webb said at the Milken Global Conference in Los Angeles last month. She points to these eight careers, in particular:

 1) Toll booth operators and cashiers: People who work in the transactional space shouldn't be big fans of the Apple Watch or Apple Pay. That's because the rise of wearable technology and mobile payment systems may make jobs like toll booth operator and grocery store cashier virtually obsolete. "There is no real need for a person to be there every step of the way," Webb said.

2) Marketers: Powerful advertising tools of the future may allow brands to fashion their messages to customers with precision accuracy. Webb pointed to new experiments with technologies that study customer behavior to identify what kind of ads will be most effective. "This is pretty much unlike anything we've seen before," she said. If these tools work, they may translate to smaller creative and strategic teams at marketing and ad firms.

LG's Ultra Thin OLED TV

LG Display now has an Ultra thin OLED Television. Before this, it's thinnest TV screen on the market was a 55-inch OLED panel that is 4.3 mm thick, but this recent Ultra thin OLED panel measures 55 inches diagonally, weighs 4.2 pounds and is only 0.97 mm thick. It can also stick to the wall by means of a magnetic mat. The panel, displayed during a media event in Korea and first reported by the Yonhap News Agency, is just a prototype, that is actual devices using this new OLED panel is actually way off. When stacked together, four of these screens are still thinner than LG Display's Thinnest screen on the market.
